Mesitas del Colegio (little school tables) Located 25 miles from Bogota, approximately an hour and a half by car, the town of Mesitas has become a major tourist site of Cundinamarca. Not just due to the hot climate, but because of its proximity to the Capital, its hotels, rental properties and the most beautiful natural reserves in Cundinamarca: La cuchilla de Peñas Blancas (white sheer drops).
This reserve has lush mountains and streams that come straight from the mountain such as; Santa Marta, La Pitala, Antioquia, Campos and the Calandaima river, this water supplies different aqueducts and the urban sector. There are horse trails where daily nature walks are conducted in the presence of all the exuberant of flora and fauna.
During the day, the town turns into a main commercial center. The Town Hall is always looking for activities for locals and tourist alike. You can be part of some of these even if you are just visiting. In the main square, children play while adults sit on the park benches and enjoy the breeze to cool off a bit during the scorching heat of the day.
At night fall, you can party with friends or family to the beat of some of the best music in town, have a few drinks and dance until dusk, but before you do any of this, you might want to enjoy a local dish or pick from a large selection of national and international cuisine for all tastes.
Ecological hiking near the town is possible if you want to walk or just visit some of the churches around, there are paths such as; Camino Real De La Esmeralda (Royal Emerald Road), Camino embrujado(Hunted Road)and lagoon of Junca.
And for those a little more passionate about rock art, you will find the (painted rocks) petroglifitos located 15 minutes from town. To get there you need a professional guide from the town hall or you might run the risk of being late, or even getting lost.
